Each scale has its own characteristic sound spectrum based on these steps. Here is an overview of the most common scales and their intervals in the form of whole and half steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major scale (Ionian)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS<\/strong><br>The major scale is the best known and most widely used scale. It conveys a cheerful, open sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minor scale (Aeolian)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS<\/strong><br>The natural minor scale has a melancholy, sad character and is often used in emotional and calm pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Harmonic minor scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 1.5 WS (augmented second) \u2013 HS<\/strong><br>The harmonic minor scale has an exotic, almost oriental sound and is often used in classical and jazz music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Melodic minor scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS<\/strong><br>This scale is mainly used in its ascending form and has a smoother, less dissonant sound than the harmonic minor scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pentatonic major scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 WS \u2013 1.5 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 1.5 WS<\/strong><br>This scale consists of only five notes and is often used in rock, pop and blues. It conveys an open and simple sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pentatonic minor scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>1.5 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 1.5 WS \u2013 WS<\/strong><br>This scale is the minor version of the pentatonic and is often used in blues and jazz music to create a bluesy, earthy sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Whole-tone scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS<\/strong><br>The whole-tone scale consists only of whole-tone steps and has a dreamlike, floating sound. It is often used in impressionistic music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Half-tone whole-tone scale (Diminished Scale)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS<\/strong><br>This scale has a dissonant, restless sound and is often used in jazz and modern music, especially over diminished chords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diminished Whole-Half Scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS<\/strong><br>This scale is often used in jazz and also creates a strong tension and dissonance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Blues Scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>1.5 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 1.5 WS \u2013 WS<\/strong><br>The blues scale is based on the pentatonic minor scale, supplemented by an additional note (the \u201cblue note\u201d). It produces a distinctive, \u201cbluesy\u201d sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chromatic scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS<\/strong><br>The chromatic scale consists only of semitones and covers all 12 tones of Western music. It sounds extremely dense and is often used for fast runs or modulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Modes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each mode has its own character:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dorian:<\/strong> <strong>WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phrygian:<\/strong> <strong>HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lydian:<\/strong> <strong>WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mixolydian:<\/strong> <strong>WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lokrian:<\/strong> <strong>HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These modes offer different sound characters from mystical (Phrygian) to majestic (Lydian) and are often used in jazz, pop and church music. For more information, please visit my blog about the modes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hungarian major scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS - HS - 1.5 WS - HS - HS - WS - WS<\/strong><br>Also known in old German as \u201cZigeuner-Dur\u201d, this scale has an exotic and dramatic character and is often used in traditional Eastern European music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hungarian minor scale<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 HS \u2013 1.5 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 1.5 WS \u2013 HS<\/strong><br>Also known in old German as the \u201cgypsy minor scale\u201d, it has a dark, mysterious sound and emphasizes the overbearing second step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bebop scale (major)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>WS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS<\/strong><br>This scale contains an additional chromatic tone to allow phrasing over 8 notes and to create a constant change between strong and weak beats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Altered scale (super-local)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formula: <strong>HS \u2013 WS \u2013 HS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS \u2013 WS<\/strong><br>The altered scale is often used over dominant chords that require resolution.
